That time YouTube Crashed

Since the early 2000’s parents have been relying on YouTube to satiate their children during date nights and while visiting their in — laws and friends. Many years later I had a child of my own, and thought I’d hacked the system when I let her listen to YouTube at bed time but on a device out of reach to avoid the villainous screen time.

Tonight, YouTube crashed. I’m not sure there will ever be peace in my home again. In other words, “Winter is coming.” I always felt so well equipped to handle bed time. My daughter has always slept in her own room, she never fussed at bed time. Sometimes she puts herself to bed and has only one request, music. Until tonight I thought I had won bed time.

She likes a few of the one-hour playlists on YouTube, she lets you know which one by asking for the song that they play list begins with. I could never have been prepared for something like this. Self-soothing techniques and bed time without assistance are always the best way to do things but parenting in 2020 almost has no room for that particularly here in the heart of COVID — 19.

That was a rough hour.

Phew.

I think we’ll be weening off of youtube at bedtime. Life can get uncomfortable when you need to change.
